whiplash injury
damage caused by the sudden jerking backwards of the head and neck, as in a road accident. A severe whiplash can cause death, but injury is the usual outcome. The VERTEBRAE , spinal cord, LIGAMENTS and NERVES in the neck may all be damaged. Treatment usually involves wearing a special collar to immobilize the affected area.
