the production of IMMUNITY to a disease by INOCULATION with a VACCINE or a specially prepared material that stimulates the production of ANTIBIODIES . It was used initially to refer only to cowpox virus (which also protected against SMALLPOX ) but now is synonymous with INOCULATION in immunizing against disease.
