uric acid

an organic acid that contains nitrogen and is the endproduct of the METABOLISM of PROTEIN . It oocurs in the URINE but in small amounts (less than 1 gram). It is formed in the liver and excreted by the kidneys, but in excess, salts (urates) form and occur as stone in the urinary tract. Deposits of urates in joints is a feature of GOUT .
