usually the two small masses of LYMPHOID TISSUE situated on either side at the back of the mouth (the palatine tonsils). However, another pair occur below the TONGUE , which are the lingual tonsils, while the ADENOIDS are the pharyngeal tonsils. All are part of the body's protective mechanism against INFECTION .
