a particular technique using X-RAYS or ULTRASOUND so that structures at a given depth are brought into sharp focus while those at other levels are deliberately blurred. In the way, pictures of slices of the body are obtained at different levels to build up a three-dimensional image. The image obtained is called a tomogram.
