tolbutamide

a drug taken by mouth in the treatment of noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. It acts directly on the pancreas to stimulate insulin production and is particularly effective in elderly patients with mild diabetes (see SULPHONYLUREA ). Side-effects are similar to those of the SULPHONAMIDE and include skin reactions and transient jaundice.
