target cell

an abnormal form of ERYTHROCYTE (red blood cell),which is large and has a ringed appearance when stained and viewed microscopically, resembling a target. These cells are present in several kinds of ANAEMIA , including those caused by iron deficiency. They are also found when there is LIVER disease, a small SPLEEN , HAEMOGLOBIN abnormalities (haemoglobinopathies) and THALASSAEMIA .
