synovitis

INFLAMMATION of the SYNOVIAL MEMBRANE that lines a JOINT capsule. The result is swelling with pain. It is associated with RHEUMATIC DISEASE , injury or INFECTION (e.g. chronic TUBERCULOSIS ). The treatment depends on the cause of the condition, and often a sample of the synovia is taken for examination.
