subphrenic abscess

an ABSCESS occurring beneath the diaphragm and commonly on the right side. It may be caused by INFECTION after an operation or PERFORATION of an organ, e.g. a PEPTIC ULCER . Surgery is usually necessary although ANTIBIOTICS may be effective.
