a spherical bacterium (see BACTERIA ) of the genus Streptococcus, which is Gram-positive (see GRAM'S STAIN ) and forms chains. Many species are responsible for a variety of INFECTIONS , including SCARLET FEVER , ENDOCARDITIS and PNEUMONIA .
