spongiform encephalopathy
a neurological disease that is caused by a SLOW VIRUS and results in a spongy degeneration of the BRAIN with progressive DEMENTIA . Examples are CREUTZFELDT-JAKOB DISEASE and Kuru (a progressive and fatal viral INFECTION seen in New Guinea Highland peoples, the incidence of which has decreased with decline in cannibalism).
