spondylitis

INFLAMMATION of the spinal VERTEBRAE - ARTHRITIS of the spine. Ankylosing spondylitis is a rheumatic disease of the SPINAL COLUMN and sacroiliac JOINTS (i.e. those of the SACRUM and ILIUM ), causing pain and stiffness in the hip and shoulder. It may result in the spine becoming rigid (see KYPHOSIS ).
