spinal cord
the part of the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM that runs from the BRAIN , through the SPINAL COLUMN . Both GREY and WHITE MATTER are present, the former as an H-shaped core within the latter. A hollow core in the grey matter forms the central canal, which contains the CEREBROSPINAL FLUID . The cord is covered by MENINGES and it contains both SENSORY and MOTOR NEURONS . Thirty-one pairs of spinal nerves arise from the cord, passing out between the arches of the VERTEBRAE .
