skin

the outer layer of the body, comprising an external EPIDERMIS , itself made up of a stratum corneum (horney layer) formed of flat cells that rub off, being replaced from below. Beneath this are two more layers (stratum lucidum and stratum granulosum), which act as intermediate stages between the stratum corneum and a still lower layer, the Malpighian layer. The Malpighian layer is where the epidermis is produced. The dermis lies beneath the epidermis, and there is subcutaneous tissue, composed mainly of fat. The SUBCUTANEOUS tissue, contains glands ( SWEAT , SEBACEOUS , etc), SENSORY receptors for pain, pressure and TEMPERATURE , NERVES , MUSCLES and blood capillaries. The skin is a protective layer against injury and parasites, and it moderates water loss. It is a medium of temperature control by means of the SWEAT GLANDS and blood capillaries and also the HAIRS (which provide insulation).
