the JOINT formed by the shoulder blade ( SCAPULA ) and the upper end of the HUMERUS . It is a ball-and-socket joint surrounded by a fibrous CAPSULE strengthened with bands of LIGAMENT . The strength of the joint is derived from the associated MUSCLES .
