steroid HORMONES responsible for the control of sexual development (primary and SECONDARY SEXUAL CHARACTERISTICS ) and reproductive function. The ovaries (see OVARY ) and TESTICLES are the organs primarily involved in hormone production, of which there are three main types: ANDROGENS , the male sex hormones; OESTROGENS and PROGESTERONE , the female sex hormones.
