CHROMOSOMES that play a major role in determining the sex of the bearer. Sex chromosomes contain GENES that control the characteristics of the individual, e.g. TESTICLES in males, ovaries (see OVARY ) in females. Women have two X-CHROMOSOMES while men have one X-chromosome and one Y-CHROMOSOME .
