Medical Term

schizophrenia

any one of the large group of severe mental disorders typified by gross distortion of reality, disturbance in language and breakdown of thought processes, perceptions and emotions. Delusions and HALLUCINATIONS are usual, as are apathy, confusion, incontinence and strange behaviour. No single cause in known but genetic factors are probably important. Drug therapy has improved the outlook markedly over recent years.
