schistosomiasis

a parasitic infection with the larvae of the fluke, which enter through the skin from infected water in tropical regions. The adults then settle in blood vessels of the intestine or bladder. Subsequent release of eggs causes ANAEMIA , DIARRHOEA , DYSENTERY , enlargement of the SPLEEN and LIVER and CIRRHOSIS of the liver. The disease can be treated with drugs but preventative measures are preferable. Schistosomiasis affects millions of people worldwide, particularly in the Far and Middle East, South America and Africa.
