saliva
an alkaline liquid present in the MOUTH to keep the mouth moist, aid swallowing of food and, through the presence of amylase ENZYMES (ptyalin), to digest starch. It is secreted by the SALIVARY GLANDS , and, in addition to ptyalin, contains water, MUCUS and buffers (to minimize changes in acidity).
