a complex nucleic acid present mainly in the CYTOPLASM of cells but also in the NUCLEUS . It is involved in the production of PROTEINS and exits in three forms, ribosomal (r), transfer (t) and messenger (m) RNA. In some viruses it forms the genetic material (see also DNA ).
