Medical Term
ringworm
an infection caused by various species of fungi (see FUNGUS ) and known medically as tinea. It is classified according to the area affected, e.g. tinea capitis, which is ringworm of the scalp. Other areas affected are the beard, groin (tinea cruris or dhobie itch), nails and feet ( ATHLETE'S FOOT ). The infection is slightly raised, itchy and has a ring-like appearance. It is highly contagious, and the commonest form is athlete's foot. The ANTIBIOTIC drug griseofulvin, taken by mouth, is the normal treatment for ringworm and also antifungal creams applied to the affected areas.
