retina
Fig. — retina

the layer that lines the interior of the EYE . The retina itself consists of two layers. The inner layer, next to the cavity of the eyeball, contains the light-sensitive cells, the RODS and CONES , and also NERVE fibres. This layer receives light directed on to its surface by the LENS . The outer layer of the retina, next to the choroid ( MEMBRANE ), contains pigmented cells that prevent the passage of light.
