Medical Term
quinine
a colourless alkaloid, derived from the bark of certain (cinchona) trees, which is a strong ANTISEPTIC and especially effective against the malarial parasite. It was formerly widely used in the treatment of MALARIA but has now been replaced because it is toxic in larger doses. In small amounts it has a stimulating effect and is used in tomic water.
