Medical Term
prolapsed intervertebral disc
the INTERVERTEBRAL DISCS provide cushioning for the BRAIN and SPINAL CORD and each is composed of an outer fibrous layer over a pulpy centre. A slipped disc is caused by the inner layer being pushed through the fibrous layer to impinge upon NERVES , causing pain (commonly LUMBAGO or SCIATICA ). The PROLAPSE usually occurs during sudden twisting or bending of the SPINAL COLUMN and is more likely to occur during middle age. Treatment involves bed rest on a flat, firm surface, probably with manipulation and physiotherapy at a later stage. If absolutely necessary, the disc can be removed, but this is now less common.
