a birth occurring before the end of the normal full term of PREGNANCY . The definition refers to babies weighing less than 2.5 kg. In many cases the cause is unknown, but in some it may be because of PRE-ECLAMPSIA , kidney or heart disease or multiple pregnancy. Premature babies often require INCUBATOR care.
