peritoneum

the SEROUS MEMBRANE that lines the abdominal cavity. That lining the abdominal walls is the parietal peritoneum, while the visceral peritoneum covers the organs. The folds of peritoneum from one organ to another are given special names, e.g. MESENTERY . Both are continuous and form a closed sac at the back of the abdomen in the male, while in the female there is an opening for the FALLOPIAN TUBE on either side.
