1. the skeletal structure that is formed by the HIP bones, SACRUM and COCCYX and connects with the ilia (see ILIUM ) are wider apart and there are certain angular differences from the male pelvis, all of which relate to childbearing. The pelvis is a point of contact for the MUSCLES of the legs, and it partially envelops the BLADDER and RECTUM . In males it also houses the PROSTATE GLAND and seminal vesicles while in females it contians the UTERUS and ovaries (see OVARY ). 2. a basin-shaped cavity in the body, e.g. the renal pelvis, the hollow interior of the KIDNEY that opens out into the URETER , into which URINE is drained.
