1. the part of the HEART that regulates the beat, the SINOATRIAL NODE . 2. in patients with a HEART BLOCK , a device inserted into the body to maintain a normal heart rate. There are different types of pacemaker, some being permanent, others temporary; some stimulate the beat while others are activated only when the natural rate of the heart falls below a certain level.
