one of several drugs derived from OPIUM and including MORPHINE and CODEINE . They act by depressing the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM , thus relieving pain suppressing coughing. Morphine and HEROIN , synthetic derivatives of opium, are NARCOTICS .
