one of a pair of SENSORY nerves for smell. It is the first CRANIAL NERVE and comprises many fine threads connecting RECEPTORS in the MUCOUS MEMBRANE of the olfactory area of the NOSE , which pass through holes in the SKULL , fuse to form one fibre and then pass back to the BRAIN .
