occipital bone

a BONE of the SKULL , which is shaped like a saucer and forms the back of the CRANIUM and part of its base. Arising from the base of this bone are two occipital CONDYLES , which articulate with the first cervical VERTEBRA (the atlas) of the SPINAL COLUMN .
