neurosis
also: neuroses
a mental disorder but one in which the patient retains a grasp on reality (unlike PSYCHOSIS ). Neuroses may be caused by DEPRESSION , PHOBIA , HYSTERIA or HYPOCHONDRIA . Anxiety is the commonest version, although this does respond to treatment. In practice, the boundary between neurosis and psychosis is vague.
