a NERVE cell, vital in the transmission of NERVE IMPULSES . Each CELL has an enlarged portin ( the cell body) from which extends the long, thin AXON for carrying impulses away. Shorter, more numerous DENDRITES receive impulses. The transmission of impulses is faster in axons that are covered in a sheath of MYELIN .
