Neurofibromatosis Type 1

Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), formerly called VON RECKLINGHAUSEN DISEASE, is a HEREDITARY CONDITION caused by changes in the NF1 GENE. It affects the NERVOUS SYSTEM and SKIN and may cause café-au-lait spots, freckles, and benign nerve tumors called NEUROFIBROMAS. Some people may develop problems involving the EYE, BONES, or other body systems.
