murmur

a characteristic sound, which can be heard using a STETHOSCOPE , caused by uneven blood flow through the HEART or BLOOD VESSELS when these are diseased or damaged. Heart murmurs can also be present in normal individuals, especially children, without indicating disease. Murmurs are classified as diastolic, when the VENTRICLES are relaxed and filling with blood, or systolic, when they are contracting.
