Mononuclear Phagocyte System

The mononuclear phagocyte system is a network of immune cells derived from MONOCYTES that includes MACROPHAGES and related cells located throughout body tissues. These cells identify, engulf, and remove foreign particles, microorganisms, and damaged cells through PHAGOCYTOSIS. The term has largely replaced the older name RETICULOENDOTHELIAL SYSTEM.
