mitral valve

The mitral valve, also called the BICUSPID VALVE, is one of the four HEART VALVES. It lies between the LEFT ATRIUM and LEFT VENTRICLE. The valve contains two flexible flaps called CUSPS that open to allow oxygen-rich BLOOD to move from the left atrium into the left ventricle. When the left ventricle contracts, the mitral valve closes to prevent blood from flowing backward. Problems affecting the mitral valve may cause conditions such as MITRAL REGURGITATION or MITRAL STENOSIS.
