a projection of the TEMPORAL bone of the SKULL , which contains numerous air spaces (mastoid cells) and is situated behind the ear. It provides a point of attachment for some of the neck muscles and communicates with the middle EAR through an air-filled channel called the mastoid ANTRUM . See MASTOIDITIS .
