manic depressive psychosis

a form of severe mental illness in which there are alternating bouts of MANIA and severe DEPRESSION . While manic, the person may be incoherent, outrageous or violent. Drug treatment is required for both phases of the illness, and there seems to be an inherited tendency towards acquiring it. Drugs are also helpful in reducing the frequency of attacks, between which the person is normally quite well.
