lumpectomy
the surgical removal of a TUMOUR with the tissue immediately around it but leaving intact the bulk of the tissue and the LYMPH NODES . This applies particularly to BREAST CANCER , when the procedure is often followed by RADIOTHERAPY and is undertaken for patients with a small tumour (less than 2 cm) and no metastases (see METASTASIS ) to nearby lymph nodes or organs elsewhere in the body.
