lumbar puncture

the procedure wherein a hollow needle is inserted into the spinal canal in the lumbar region (usually between the third and fourth LUMBAR VERTEBRAE ) to obtain a sample of CEREBROSPINAL FLUID . The fluid is used in diagnosis of diseases of the nervous system or to introduce drugs, ANAESTHETICS , etc.
