lockjaw

a very serious and sometimes fatal infectious disease that is caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, spores of which enter through a WOUND , Rapid multiplication of the bacteria produces a TOXIN that affects the NERVES , resulting in rigidity and SPASM of MUSCLES (hence its nonmedical alternative name). Often there is high FEVER and the spasms cause extreme agony. If respiratory muscles are involved, death may occur by ASPHYXIA . Effective ANTITOXIN is available, although its effects are not permanent and it needs to be regularly maintained. ANTIBIOTICS such as PENICILLIN are also effective against the bacteria.
