Medical Term
leucocytosis
except for during PREGNANCY , MENSTRUATION and exercise, an abnormal and temporary increase in the number of white blood cells (see LEUCOCYTE ) in the blood. It usually accompanies bacterial but not viral infections, because the body's defence mechanism is fighting the bacteria by producing leucocytes. A blood sample may thus form a useful diagnostic tool for a condition that has not yet manifested any physical symptoms.
