laser

(acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) a device that produces a powerful and narrow beam of light where the light is of one wavelength in phase. This produces a beam of high-energy light that can be used in surgery. Different lasers can be used for various procedures. For example, the argon laser heats and coagulates tissues because HAEMOGLOBIN absorbs the energy - this is therefore used to seal bleeding vessels. The carbon-dioxide laser is used to make incisions because water in CELLS absorbs the energy, thus destroying those cells. Lasers are also used in retinal ( EYE ) surgery and in the removal of BIRTHMARKS .
