laryngotracheobronchitis
an acute INFLAMMATION of the major parts of the respiratory tract, causing shortness of breath, a CROUP -like cough and hoarseness. It occurs usually because of viral infection and particularly in young children where there may be some obstruction of the LARYNX . The main airways, the BRONCHI , become coated with fluid generated by the inflamed tissues, resulting in the shortness of breath. Treatment is through INHALATIONS , ANTIBIOTICS , if appropriate, and, if the obstruction is serious, hospitalization may be necessary for INTUBATION , TRACHEOSTOMY , etc.
