jaw

the term for the BONES that carry the teeth and associated soft tissues. More specifically, they are the upper jaw (maxilla) and the lower jaw (mandible). The maxillae are fixed, while the mandible (which is one bone after the age of about 12 months) hinges on part of the temporal bone in front of the ear.
