intussusception
Fig. — intussusception

an eventual obstruction of the bowel caused by one part of the bowel slipping inside another part beneath it, much as a telescope closes up. The commonest sufferers are young children, and the symptoms include pain, vomiting and the passage of a jelly-like bloodstained MUCUS . If the condition does not right itself, corrective treatment is essential either by a barium enema or surgery.
