intervertebral disc

fibrous cartilaginous discs that connect adjacent VERTEBRAE and permit rotational and bending movements. The discs make up approximately 25 percent of the backbone length, and they act as shock absorbers, providing cushioning for the BRAIN and SPINAL CORD . With age, the discs lose their effectiveness and may be displaced (see PROLAPSED INTERVERTEBRAL DISC ).
