inflammation
Fig. — inflammation

the response of the body's tissues to injury or infection, which involves pain, redness, heat and swelling (acute inflammation). The first sign, when the tissues are infected or injured physically or chemically, is a dilation of BLOOD VESSELS in the affected area, increasing blood flow and resulting in heat and redness. The circulation then slows a little, and white blood cells migrate into the tissues producing the swelling. The white blood cells engulf invading BACTERIA , dead tissue and foreign particles. After this, either the white blood cells migrate back to the circulation or there is the production and discharge of PUS as healing commences. Chronic inflammation is when repair is not complete and there is formation of SCAR tissue.
